Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Accessibility

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month by celebrating the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. The official theme for Hispanic Heritage Month 2023 is Latinos: Driving Prosperity, Power, and Progress in America. Monica Davila, LMI senior analyst, human capital strategy, shares the story of her roots and how she celebrates her rich cultural heritage.

What It Means to Be Latinx

Having immigrated to the United States at the tender age of 17, I am deeply rooted in the importance of my culture, language, and hard work. Growing up in a family where women were the backbone, I have been shaped by my grandmother's unwavering resilience and her fight for survival.

My grandmother was born in a poor village in Colombia's mountains. She came to the city at a very young age with nothing but her own willpower to make a living. She worked tirelessly her entire life, never once setting foot in a school, and is now the pillar of our family at the age of 92. Her name is Rosa; I call her “Rosa la mas hermosa.”

Moving to the USA let me pursue an education and support my family. However, I remain committed to honoring and celebrating my culture, which boasts an unwavering spirit despite the violence and drugs that have plagued my home country. We Hispanics persevere, work hard, and never shy away from rejoicing in our rich heritage.

Keeping my culture alive is very important to me, which is why I speak Spanish to my child, dance around to salsa music as I clean, and use my grandmother's recipes when I cook. As Latinos, we all bring our unique flavors and experiences from different parts of America, sharing our stories with the younger generation to keep our traditions alive. Despite obstacles, are a vibrant and beautiful culture, brimming with life and love.

As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we are reminded of the path that Latinos have traveled to arrive at this moment and of the meaningful and lasting impact that we continue to make on society. Through our contributions, we leave a rich legacy for generations to come.
