Maureen Merkl
Sr. Consultant, Healthcare Advisory
Dr. Maureen Merkl, a registered nurse, came to LMI from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). There, she worked with severely injured, ill, or wounded post-9/11 service members to support their recovery, rehab, and transition from active duty to veteran status. She served as a consultant to the U.S. Marine Corps Wounded Warrior Regiment on matters pertaining to the VA. Prior to this, she liaised between military treatment facilities and VA polytrauma units, crossing barriers between the Department of Defense and VA. Maureen works in a community emergency department and published her doctoral capstone project on finding and treating service members who present to community emergency departments. She taught nursing at George Washington University.
She has a bachelor’s in nursing from William Paterson University, a master’s in nursing with an emphasis on emergency nursing from George Mason University, and a doctorate in nursing practice from Duke University. She is a certified scrum master and is certified in case management and rehab nursing. She is an active member of the Emergency Nurses Association and serves on the planning board of Virginia Hospital Center’s Medical Brigade for which she has participated in seven medical missions to Honduras.
