Vice Admiral Raquel “Rocky” Bono, the first female Navy medical officer to achieve three-star rank, retired in 2019 after four decades in military medicine and health care administration. She joined LMI’s board in 2020.

Appointed the second director of the Defense Health Agency in 2015, Admiral Bono led a joint agency with significant responsibilities for the delivery of integrated, affordable, and high-quality health services to uniformed, reserve, and retired military personnel and their families. She also helped drive synergy of clinical and business processes across the $50 billion Military Health System. Prior to DHA, she was chief of the Navy Medical Corps.

She is a senior fellow at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. In March 2020, Washington Governor Jay Inslee appointed her to head the state’s health system response to COVID-19.

She received her medical degree from the School of Medicine at Texas Tech University’s Health Sciences Center and her bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin.
