In response to a joint request from the General Services Administration (GSA) and the Defense Travel Management Office (DTMO), LMI comprehensively reviewed the travel policies governing civilian employees and uniformed service members. Together, the travel policies of the two programs establish and administer the government’s travel policies for all federal civilian employees and uniformed service members.
LMI found numerous opportunities for upgrading the government’s travel policies and business practices to make them stronger and more clear—from bolstering the organizations’ governance structures to standardizing government-wide regulations. Our review did more than just highlight issues—it laid out specific actions in an implementation plan that delineated responsibilities, schedules, and actions requiring new legislation. All of our recommendations were made with an awareness of industry trends and leveraging industry best practices to the government’s advantage. Moreover, by stressing consistency of travel policies for all travelers, they improved the travel experience and eased management and administrative burdens.
