Fellows Spotlight: The Value of Collaboration

June 22, 2020

Ten years ago, Brant Horio sought a new opportunity with increased technical mentorship, leadership, and collaboration. He craved a culture that fostered professional growth and a role that enabled him to learn from some of the most innovative individuals in the field. Brant found what he was looking for at LMI—consideration of colleagues as peers and collaboration that drives mutual growth.

As a data science fellow, Brant applies his expertise to drive innovation and facilitates innovative processes at LMI. He builds relationships across the enterprise, driving shared offerings that differentiate the LMI approach, strengthens our technical brand, and capitalizes on strategic opportunities.

“My strategic focus is to remain knowledgeable of how LMI is adapting to the rapidly changing technology landscape and to advance our analytics strategy, solutions, identification of capability gaps, and more broadly, LMI’s technical brand and thought leadership,” Brant offers. He leverages his institutional knowledge, executive experience, and network of partners to enhance his contributions to LMI and evangelize LMI’s thought leadership through external outreach.

Brant believes innovation is characterized by having a curiosity and scientific method based mindset—consistently asking questions, forming abstract concepts, and applying lessons learned to pragmatically consider critical factors for success and risks. To enable the innovation process, he emphasizes two perspectives: conscious preparation through consistently cultivating an innovation toolkit of experience and unconscious preparation through constant creative thinking.

Since becoming a fellow in 2020, Brant has enjoyed improving on government practices by collaborating with bright individuals across the organization at different career stages. “My colleagues and the corporate culture that I have inherited, practiced, and have intentionally worked to cultivate and promote as a corporate citizen and director is what makes me proudest to be a part of LMI,” says Brant. “This differentiating aspect of the LMI culture attracted me to work here in the first place, and it is what has kept me here all these years.”
